Blessed is He Who Walks With God.

“1Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.” - Psalms 1:1-2 (MEV)

Scripture is clear to call such a man blessed “Who walks not in the counsel of the wicked.” Are you walking in the counsel of the wicked? This affects us in many ways. One would be practical. When we surround ourselves with wicked counsel, we can practically see the effects. We give in on convictions, we set aside what we truly care about. We often start running after things that damage us. We do things that we know are not smart but we cave in because we listen to the consul of the wicked. Too often we perceive this statement as completely vile people. We interpret wicked as gruesome, and perverse. While it certainly shares this meaning, I would propose that it holds another truth.

Wicked are those apart from God. This means anything apart from Him. Too often we run to counsel from everything but God and we wonder why the results are poor and painful. The wicked, perish. Where do you get advice from? What voices do you listen to? Of what counsel do you submit? We are made to follow counsel. It is how we are built, we listen to voices and they affect us internally. Psalms 33:11 “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations.” The counsel of the Lord is uplifting. Psalms 1:3 “In all he does, he prospers.” Walking in the way of the Lord requires discipline. But what joy to know this walk is not alone. With the Holy Spirit by our side, we can walk blessed. Now, because of grace, the law of God is written on our hearts and his counsel is always present through His word and Holy Spirit.
